  • WELCOME!

I'm Janna, and I'm so glad you're here! Follow along with me on this adventure of life, decorating, and bringing modern farmhouse goodness to my little corner of the world.

Growing up on an apple farm in Oregon, I dreamed of running a "big business" in the city. I never imagined I'd grow up to have such a fondness for the everyday items I tripped over in our barn. Life is funny like that. Sometimes the most unexpected detours are the most fun!

This. Is. Happening.

If you missed it, we bought a farm (read about it here!). Wait, WHAT?? We did???

This 1890 farmhouse and 6 acres of pasture land will soon be home sweet home, and we are still pinching ourselves. The home will be renovated top to bottom before we move in, and we are excited to share the adventure with YOU!

Here are a couple pics of the outside to refresh your memory… (photo cred: Jillustrated Photography)

It just so happens to be DEMO DAY for our #renovationontheprairie (let’s hear it for Fridley Custom Homes, skillfully taking on this project!), but don’t worry. We took TONS of “before” pics of the house (which will be especially fun after the renovation is complete!) and we’d love to share it with you…NOW! Grab a coffee, bundle up (it’s COLD in here…the furnace is out), and come on in!

I love this view from the front door. See the little niche straight ahead, under the stairs? It’s gonna be so much fun to style & decorate that little spot, isn’t it? Don’t get attached to anything you see in these “before” pics. 😉 Change is COMING!

I’m absolutely IN LOVE with the staircase and newel post. Sadly, it won’t be staying as-is since it doesn’t meet code and is far too short to keep a child safe (especially in the upstairs hall!). HOWEVER, we will try to incorporate the original newel post by adding a block to the bottom to make it taller. We’ll see what kind of magic the finish carpenter can do…it’s so beautiful and original to the home.

The front door will be replaced, and it appears there was once a transom window above the front door…we hope to add it once again…give me all of the natural light! 🙂

Ok, before we go upstairs, let me show you the rest of the main level! The original home has 9.5′ ceilings which I adore. It really keeps things feeling open.

Above is the main living area. See that little dividing wall straight ahead? That will be removed, and a fireplace added in the middle. Just look at those windows! Once you step into the room,  you’ll see the front bay window to the right (below).

Not a bad view, huh? And the PERFECT spot for next year’s Christmas tree!

I was so thankful we had a beautiful, sunny morning yesterday, when Jill came to photograph the house.

Ok, let’s go stand in the bay window area and look back into the living area…this is the view: (below)

Surprise! There’s a fireplace on the left! It will be removed as it is not functioning properly, and remember, the new fireplace will be on the right, where the little arched niche wall is currently. (I know. I can feel your judgement. You like the niche wall. Trust me, opening the space up will be dreamy!) See the wall straight ahead, past the fireplace? That wall will go bye-bye too, so you’ll be able to see straight into the kitchen! Below is a closer view of the wall that will come down to open up the kitchen area (where you see the doorway & chandelier).

And if we stand in the opening to the kitchen and look back to the living space, this is what we see: (below)

To the right of the fireplace is an opening to my office. However, since there are two doors to the office, this one will be removed and will become a great wall for a nice big piece of furniture.

While we’re here, let’s pop in and take a look at my office. This room gets AMAZING light! (the blue room)

There’s currently a fireplace (not functioning) to the left here, but it will be replaced with a closet. Don’t judge…Gotta keep those pillows & client files SOMEWHERE!

I took this cute little memo board out, and it will have a new home in the pantry someday…so fun!

See the green room & fancy pants chandelier? That’s the current dining room/kitchen area…let’s go!

***I don’t blame you if you need a snack break…this is a LONG post! Wheat thins? String cheese?***

Ok so Ryan got a little antsy this weekend, and removed a couple cabinets before we took pics…that’s ok. We were too excited! The door on the far left is the current back entrance, which will be kept as our main entrance for friends & family (I’m already dreaming of a dutch door here). I like a “back porch” sort of entrance. Casual, inviting, and perfect for farm life! See the green cabinets? That’s the current kitchen, but will become our pantry. The rest of this room will be a nice big farmhouse kitchen. The ceilings here are much lower, so we’re hoping to vault them into the attic space (this part of the house is only one level).

See the (open)green door on the left (above)? That leads to the current pantry, which will be opened up and will become part of the kitchen.

For reference, in the above pic, the current pantry door is right behind me. I’ll show you what it looks like in there below:

I’m showing you the above pic again so you can see where we’re headed next…see the hallway entrance just below the chandelier? Straight through there, you’ll see this bathroom currently:

This festive red bathroom will actually become a hallway to the laundry room/mud room. The wallpaper in this room is actually my favorite in the house.

If we turn left instead of going into this bathroom, there’s a fun little ANTIQUE in the hall…wanna see?

A WALL PHONE???? Oh the memories! Remember when you stretched the cord all the way into the pantry so you could talk to your friends in private? And your little sisters would listen at the door anyway? Or better yet, they would quietly pick up another phone in the house and listen? 😉 Anyway, this hall leads to the current bonus room, powder room, laundry room, and master bedroom, in the “newer” part of the house…added in the 1960’s and early 2000’s.

Below is the bonus room, and beyond that the current master, which will become the master suite, including a master bath and closet. This part of the house will be completely reconfigured to be more useful and allow for a better flow.

From the current bonus room, you walk directly in the master bedroom, below. The ceilings in here are fairly low, so we plan to vault them.

Looking back toward the bonus, here’s what it looks like:

See the floral wallpaper in the little doorway in the the middle of the above pic? That’s the laundry room…I’ll show you. 🙂

This room will change a LOT, as we’ll have a door to the outside, and a hallway to the kitchen where the washer currently sits.

See the blue bathroom above? That will be our powder room, but will be accessed from the other side instead (hallway). Here’s a closer look as-is:

Let’s head back down the main hall and into the “original” part of the house…I want to take you upstairs! (The hallway is slated to become a WHOLE LOT cuter!)

Ready? Come on up! Oh, BUT FIRST. Can we discuss the little niche window on the stairs???? I’m envisioning a cushion and a cozy little spot for reading, or watching the happenings on the farm! (insert heart eyes HERE!) Such a unique feature. (below)

From this spot we’ll walk to where you can see that little splash of blue carpet, our son’s room. (below)

Lots of windows and cookie monster carpet. 😉

See the small door? That’s a walk in closet (below).

Next is the upstairs bath, which will be reconfigured a bit. The vanity will be moved to the wall on the left, so mirrors can be added above…and of course a fresh new look. 😉

This bright room doesn’t have a closet, so the wall straight ahead (above) will be removed to make one larger room and walk-in closet for our daughter. (See the other room below.)

This room has 4 layers of wallpaper, each more interesting that the next as you go back in time. This house is full of history, and the discoveries we make each day are so much fun!

All of the original doors have this plate on them. So interesting!

If you’re still here, I admire your stamina. Phew! That was a long tour. 😉 I couldn’t help it. I wanted you to see as many angles as possible.

Can I just tell you? It means so much to have you along for this adventure. We have been anxiously awaiting the time when we could share this with you…and lookie there. We’ve arrived. Renovation officially began today, and the transformation has begun. We can’t wait to fill this home with love, laughter, memories, and warmth. And having you here means the world!

We’d love to know…what do you think? Is it anything like you expected in its “before” state? Smaller, bigger, more colorful, more wallpaper, or a more crazy undertaking than you thought?

Megan - Love following along with your renno! We are building new this Spring, but it’s super exciting as we designed every detail with a pencil, graph paper, and countless hours! Anyway, I think it would be fun to save some of the original pieces of wall paper and repurpose them, maybe in a frame? I love incorporating old elements into the new and plan on doing that even with a new build. Best of luck!

Linda - WoW! You have your work cut out for you! I lived in a 100 year old farm house as a girl. The rooms were either very small or very unique. The colors were interesting in our farm house as well. Pink walls, lavender walls, no shower! However, I loved to soak in the claw foot tub. Your color were vibrant, to say a nice word. I am so looking forward to seeing all the wonderful changes you have planned. I’ll be right beside you, encouraging you through the long renovation process!ReplyCancel

The excitement is so NEW (we literally JUST signed closing papers), I almost don’t even know where to begin. Words. Which words….

As you may know, I grew up on a little apple farm not far from here, and I’ve always hoped to live on a similar small farm with my own family. Well, sometimes an adventure presents itself when you’re least expecting it.

Labor Day Weekend 2017: I told my husband I was 1000% happy where we are, and I didn’t even want to look at moving right now (we almost purchased some property last Christmas to build a new home, and ultimately felt it wasn’t the right time or situation).  And then, he got the bug to look at real estate online (Sunday of Labor Day weekend). He found a very interesting property…literally a stone’s throw away from the property we almost purchased last Christmas…but this one had the DREAMIEST driveway that I’ve admired for years. We drove right out to see it and….LOVE. AT. FIRST. SIGHT.

I mean, I don’t know if you understand. I am a DRIVEWAY GIRL. For some reason, I’ve always been obsessed with country lanes and driveways, something like…oh, I don’t know…THIS ONE??????????? A little further up the driveway is this little nugget: (below)

Oh hi there, Mr. Gazebo, I LOVE YOU. And the trees are obscuring it in this shot, but THERE IS A WEATHERVANE ON TOP. I’m not yelling at you. I’m telling you in a very excited voice that there is a DARLING weathervane on top of this little cutie. And electrical already in place. Sure, he needs a little love, but OH THE POSSIBILITIES.

What’s that?? Oh, you want to see the HOUSE???? Ok…here she is!

Angels are singing. Do you hear it? Maybe it’s just me…we are already so in love with our new home. 🙂 We have big plans for this place. The main house was built in 1890 by an Oregon Trail Pioneer, and then additions were added in the 1960’s and early 2000’s. We’ll be renovating the entire inside before moving in (work will start next week and we hope it will be completed by April 2018!), a little work to the outside, a fresh paint color, new landscaping…ohhhhhh so. many. things.

Ryan and I sat on this front porch one sunny day in October, and he said, “I think this could be our forever home.” Tears.

The house has huge potential, but the PROPERTY. The property is what grabbed my heart and felt like home from day one. Wanna see some pics?

There are a couple cute little outbuildings with HUGE potential…I can’t even. I’m so excited.

Once we were hooked, we were wondering what our kids would think. Would they want to leave a neighborhood? We took them over and showed them and…THEY LOVED IT. Meant to be.

We were then excited to walk our parents around the property and share our vision with them…we were relieved to hear they didn’t think we were nuts…no matter how old you are, it’s always comforting to have your parent’s approval, right? 🙂 Here we are on that very special day: (below)

My dad (to my right in the hot rod t-shirt) has always been up for an adventure. I mean, he and my mom left their comfortable life in southern California (where they were close to ALL of their family) when we were little kids, and bought an apple farm in Oregon. Aaaaaaand they knew NOTHING about farming or apples at the time. Dream-followers, adventure-seekers, putting their trust in God. And that’s how we want to be.

Our word for this process from the beginning has been ADVENTURE. And today, on the day we signed the papers, my phone alerted me to a “memory” from August, just before this whole thing started. A pic I was compelled to take while on vacation: (below)

What a fun little “God-wink.”

As of today, the beautiful leaves are all off of the trees, it’s cloudy and cold, but we’re still in love with the place. Totally and completely.

Sooooo, you might be wondering. WHO is gonna do all of this renovation? So glad you asked. We are over the moon to have an amazing team in place for the renovation. My sweet friend, Jayme, and her talented husband, Nolan, at Fridley Custom Homes, have agreed to take on this project. I’ll be doing the interior design, but I’m no builder. We knew we had to have the BEST, and we feel so blessed to have the Fridleys on the project. They know us, they know our vision, and their expertise has already been so helpful.

JUST WAIT til you see the INSIDE. Keep your eye out for a post next week with tons of interior pics in the current “before” state. But until then, we’d love to know, are you coming along on this journey with us? We can’t wait to share the whole process…the “before”, the demo, the new surface selection, the ups, and downs, the “after”… just ALL OF IT! You in? Let the #renovationontheprairie BEGIN!!!!!

Wellllllll, Merrrrrrry Christmas! I’m so excited to have you here today. This won’t be the fanciest holiday home tour you’ll see this year…but that’s why it’s just perfect for our little family. A simple palette of fresh greens, festive Christmas reds, rustic woods, and plenty of heart.

It always starts with a little inspiration to spark an idea. A song, a feeling, a color…well, I’m pretty traditional when it comes to Christmas colors (give me all of the red & green!), so I decided to go with a song…for some reason I couldn’t shake the tune from “All is Well” for days. Literally. For days. I scrounged up an old rustic board from the garage, and painted the words on it…YES! Just the push I needed…the rest was easy. An old door as a backdrop, fresh cedar garland, and some buffalo check pillows…DONE!

Simplicity = IMPACT. Which is very lucky for this girl, because simplicity was the ONLY way to go this year.

A fresh wreath from Lynch Creek Farm and a darling mat from Fifth and Grace were fun additions to the front door area.

Ok, brrrr! It’s cold out here! Let’s go inside where it’s cozy. 🙂

In the entry, a chalkboard is a fun backdrop to this sweet, delicate wreath (found at a local holiday bazaar, made Laura Jenkins, find her etsy shop here!). Laura has the most AMAZING booth every single year, and my sister and I always rush directly to see her stuff first!

The darling “All things lovely” bag was a gift from my sweet friend Abby…you can find her on Instagram @mrsabbychic. What a thoughtful surprise!

Wanna know a secret? I had a completely different thing in mind for the mantel…but when I started in on my “idea”…ugh. Not so great, my friends. NOT SO GREAT.  I stepped back and felt defeated for just a second, until I remembered this beautiful sign from Vine And Branches TX. Oh, and let’s not forget the cutest little x bench EVER. Wait. A bench on the mantel? WHY NOT?? More fresh cedar garland and some white lights were the only finishing touches needed. (Note: cedar garland is GORGEOUS, but can dry out fairly quickly and look a little crunchy. The freshness can be prolonged with a misting of water every couple days.)

This cold-weather season calls for plenty of cozy throw blankets and pillows for days! Make yourself at home…in this house it’s totally acceptable to shove extra pillows out of your way. 😉

Let’s get to the main attraction around here, the TREE! Simple, “airy”, humble, unexpected. We had so much fun going to cut this beauty in the foothills of Silverton, Oregon. It’s a wild Noble Fir, and the high elevation where it grows causes this “spaced out” look…our FAVORITE!

This type of tree allows the ornaments to be displayed so beautifully…you can really see and appreciate each one. These tree banners are a pretty addition this year, made by Laura Jenkins.

Home sweet home.

Sophie seems to love it. 😉

The hutch is always a fun little spot to remix each season…and this old “cabins” sign got dragged back in from the garage. Using old things in a new way is the most fun! Free decor! 😉

I’m sharing a few close-ups with you…sometimes the little details get lost in the big picture!

The dining table was kept ultra-simple this year, and I must say, I LOVE it. And guess what? We actually have room to EAT here, instead of moving a huge vignette out of the way. 😉 You’re welcome, family.

The kitchen is clean & simple too…with just some essential baking ingredients to decorate the island. Now, what to make first?? 🙂

The chalkboard repeats our theme this year, “All is Well.”

This year I thought it would be fun to add a faux tree to our bedroom, and it makes it feel so cozy up there! Wanna see?

My favorite thing this week has been to enjoy the tree lights each night while reading or watching tv…I can’t believe we’ve never put a tree right there!

Thanks so much for dropping by today. It’s always a treat to have you here!

Merry Christmas from our family to yours!

So Tiny Houses are all the rage these days…but WHAT IF you got the chance to deck one out in FARMHOUSE STYLE? I jumped at the chance to be involved in the design/decorating of this tiny house for a very special client…and just in case you didn’t get to come and tour it last weekend, I thought I’d share a few pics!

We decided to keep the exterior classic & rustic with a beautiful cedar shake siding…that way it will blend in beautifully with its surroundings here in the Pacific Northwest.

This tiny home is built on a 30′ trailer, so it can be moved easily. It’s just under 400 square feet, including the loft, a true tiny treasure! The builder was Jim Ash, of Daystar Tiny Homes. Ready to step inside?

There are always hiccups in any project, and this one was no different. The loveseat we originally ordered was too large for the space when it arrived, so the homeowner will be ordering a custom size. We quickly ordered this darling little settee in time for the open house, but a slightly larger piece will be better for everyday life. 🙂 The custom coffee table was made by Garden Gallery Iron Works, along with the bar stools (above left)…and so many other fun touches that you’ll see in a minute! Most of the decor you’ll see is from Garden Gallery as well…oh, we had so much fun shopping for the finishing touches!

To the right of the entry is the bathroom, including a pretty little vanity and shower. (below) The barn door is a great space-saver, but also reinforces our farmhouse look! I love the stained door, set off by lots of white shiplap walls.

There’s a little staircase to the right of the above pic, leading to the loft. The cozy loft area will be used as a guest room for the homeowner’s granddaughters and friends as well. (You can see a view up to the loft below!)

How cute is that loft space?? Garden Gallery Iron Works also made the beautiful railing…such an amazing addition!

Let’s talk about this darling kitchen & eating area!

This kitchen features a full size range (I mean, you HAVE to be able to make cookies, right?), a full size refrigerator, and a beautiful copper farm sink. There are more cabinets to be added above the counter on the right side, but you know how things go with construction. Things always take longer than planned! You may notice the fridge is up on a platform. Any guesses why? To accommodate for the wheel well! This home is built on a trailer, remember? This made the middle of the home a perfect spot for the kitchen, as most of the wheel well is covered by cabinetry. 🙂

Here’s a closer look at the sink (above)…so gorgeous! The countertops are a Corian-type material (provided by Pacific NW Marble & Granite), much lighter than granite or quartz…perfect for a tiny home!

This set of cabinets will be kept open, to keep things feeling “airy” (but will be painted white when finished). The high ceilings in this home really help it seem larger than it is…plus, great opportunities to accessorize! 🙂

This little bar area is a fun dining space.

Let’s go see the master bedroom, shall we?

Gah! This beautiful bed is a custom design by Garden Gallery Iron Works. So unique, and completely perfect for this sweet homeowner. And did you spy the little nightstand? It was found literally on the side of the road. My hubby repaired it, and I gave it a fresh coat of paint & pretty hardware. It’s just the right size for this bedroom.

This bookcase, to the left of the bed, will be a great spot to display books and family photos.

This pretty mirror will reflect light from the patio door behind me (the tiny house is currently sitting inside of a big shop until it’s completed…just imagine how bright it will be when sunshine pours in the windows!)…and have you noticed the stained beams running across the ceiling? LOVE!

Work continues on the house this week, and after that? This fun, bubbly homeowner will get to enjoy her home sweet home! Here we are at Ashley Furniture Home Store in Salem, Oregon, furniture shopping for the project! (below)

A huge thank you to Garden Gallery Iron Works and Garden Time TV for inviting me to be a part of this fun adventure! If you missed our segments on Garden Time TV, you can view them here!

Soooo? I have to know! Could YOU live in a tiny house?

Soooooo there’s this amazing family. They are dear friends, and just the sweetest people you’ll ever meet. Their family has grown a bit over the last few years, and they were ready for an organized home office/homework room.

With 4 biological children and 3 blessings adopted from China, these 7 incredible kiddos needed a spot. A spot to do school projects, homework, play games, and just hang out…away from the main living space. And the kicker? The office is the first room you see when you enter their home…so it needed to be welcoming, inviting, and organized!

The parents of these sweet kids inspire me. They are so passionate about their children, giving them each a childhood to remember. Their home is full of laughter, lots of friends hanging out, and you can feel the love. Their hearts are just HUGE!

One day in late August, I stopped by to chat with them about the project. Their wish list was simple: a homework table, bookcases to store allllllll of their books, and a little desk area for mom & dad. We didn’t really talk about colors, style, or anything like that…but I knew they would be up for anything (we’re long-time friends, remember?). I mean, talk about a dream project! Working with people you love, and dreaming up a design with no preconceived ideas.

Ready to see it?? Let’s start with a “before” pic:

So the office sort of became a catch-all for furniture not being used in other rooms…not exactly homework friendly. The walls had recently been painted, and were a great neutral color, so that was a good start! Ready to see the “after?” (below)

Fresh, modern, organized. So fun! And plenty of room to add even MORE books to the bookcases…I hear there are many more in the garage! 😉 The “Kickapoo” sign was a surprise, as it is a much-loved town where this couple grew up. I decided to use a raw board for a casual, modern look, and then sealed it with a clear water-based sealer. A perfect match to the table!

Ok, and the other side of the room, “before.” (below)

Aaaaaand “after!” (below)

Ready for homework! (sorry kids!)

One of my favorite things about this re-do is the “budget-friendliness.” It doesn’t have to cost a lot to refresh a space! And this update provided tons of function and a clean, fresh look. Win-win.

The entire room started with this fun rug, the “Kronge” from Ikea. We added the Norden Extendable Table,  Hemnes Bookcase, & Boja Pendant Lamp (also from Ikea), and these Lemoyne side chairs. The clock & gray storage cabinet were Target finds, and the pretty curtains were from Wayfair, although it appears they’ve been discontinued. 🙁 There’s a fun desk tucked over to the right, just for mom & dad.

So? Whatcha think? Not my typical look, but perfect for this fun, busy family. As always, the BEST part is happy clients (and friends!). I know this room will get tons of use, and I can’t wait for the next project with this sweet family!
