  • WELCOME!

I'm Janna, and I'm so glad you're here! Follow along with me on this adventure of life, decorating, and bringing modern farmhouse goodness to my little corner of the world.

Growing up on an apple farm in Oregon, I dreamed of running a "big business" in the city. I never imagined I'd grow up to have such a fondness for the everyday items I tripped over in our barn. Life is funny like that. Sometimes the most unexpected detours are the most fun!

Who doesn’t LOVE to shop? I recently had the opportunity to be a guest curator for Dot & Bo, a great home decor/furniture company (see their blog post here). It was fun to choose items that would be right at home in any rustic farmhouse…which is sort of my thing. πŸ˜‰ If you can fast-forward in your head for a sec, picture this: It’s January, all of your Christmas decor has been stowed away for another year, and whoa. Your space is needing a little love. Why not breathe some new life into your living room with a couple of these farmhouse staples?

IMG_0353

Ok, let’s talk about this collection. So farmhouse, without being cliche. I’ll take one of everything please!

1. Gray Diamonds Pillow. Yes, I’m addicted to pillows. And yes, I’m addicted to THIS pillow. Find it here.

2. Novi Rug. Yes, it’s a super cute rug. Yes, it WOULD look cute on your kitchen table as a runner. You’re a genius. Find it here.

3. In Love with Life Canvas Bag. Yes, it would be so cute holding all of the extra junk in your purse. Yes, it would be a perfect little gift too! Find it here.

4. Chunky Jute Pouf. Yes, it’s a perfect way to add texture to your room. And yes, your husband said you could get it! πŸ˜‰ Find it here.

5. Plateau Coffee Table. Yes, you told me you were looking for a new coffee table. Yes, this one is perfect! Find it here.

6. Basket Wall Ladder Shelf. I know. I’m sick of all the yes’s too. This piece is just the cutest. End of story. Find it here.

7. Tulane Side Table. Is this little guy cute or what? Find it here.

8. Shades of Gray Throw. No, not what you’re thinking. Just a great-looking, cozy throw to add some cozy to your sofa! Find it here.

9. Produce Aisle Clock. Ummm stop it. So cute. Find it here.

10. Simon Pendant In Gray. I. Want. This. Pendant. In. My. House. Now. Find it here.

11. Distressed Black Trough Tray. Perfect for your farm table, or your coffee table…or your entry table…I love this big guy! Find it here.

12. Zinc Coated Rotating Organizer. The options are endless! (Here come the yes’s again…) Yes, it would be great on a desk, but if you’re really feeling wild-n-crazy, style it up on your kitchen island or serve party treats out of it! Find it here.

13. Secretary’s Console Table. Lucky #13 for a reason. This piece gives me heart eyes! Use it at your entry, as a sofa table, or on your stairway landing! Find it here.

And there you have it. But this little list is only a portion of the goodness to be found at Dot & Bo. Be sure to take a look at all of their fun collections!

Merry Christmas! If you’re coming from the beautiful tour at A Thoughtful Place, welcome! So glad you’re here. I’m excited to be part of Chris Carey’s Just a Girl Christmas Room Tour this year. If you haven’t seen the rest of the homes on the tour yet, you’re in for a treat! WOW!!!

Ok, let’s get to it! The room I chose for the tour is our great room/kitchen area…it’s all one big space, so I’m including the whole area. Come on in…let’s sit by the fire, drink hot chocolate, and chat!

2015-12-07_0002

This Christmas season, I found myself incorporating a lot of “regular” stuff into the Christmas decor, to make it totally “us.” I was going for a casual, warm, inviting farmhouse Christmas. Neat and tidy spaces make me happy, and I’m not gonna lie, I’ve already had visions of how fun it will be to take down the holiday decor, ha ha. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE Christmas. Christmas music, Christmas cookies, Christmas traditions, and OF COURSE, celebrating the reason for the season, Jesus! But a girl needs her space. So kick off your winter boots and I’ll show you what I came up with.

2015-12-07_0004

I know. Can you see it? You might need to sit down for a sec. Yes, we have some RED in our house for the holidays. I’m a neutral loving girl, but after a few years of neutral trees, the red was begging to come back out. It’s just so Christmasy. And my daughter specially requested it. So, there’s that.

2015-12-07_0005

Let’s talk about this tree. It’s called a “wild Noble.” We drove up into the hills to one of the only Christmas tree farms that grows these…the elevation makes them particularly sparse and gorgeous, if you like that sort of thing. Which we do. No, actually we LOVE that sort of thing. Like a lot. My hubby found the farm on Facebook and we were so excited when we arrived to see hundreds of trees out in the field…just waiting to be cut. It was pretty much dark by the time we arrived on that rainy Thursday night, but that almost made it more exciting. We found this beauty in about 5 minutes flat, and before I knew it, my husband and son were tying it to the top of our SUV. Once we arrived home, and got the tree into the light of the garage, we were relieved to see that our tree was just as beautiful as we thought it was, out in that dark field.

2015-12-07_0006

Ok, and I just had to show you a slightly closer-up view to highlight the ornaments. The numbers were purchased at Hobby Lobby, and I painted them white, stenciled a light tan herringbone pattern on them, and my husband drilled holes in them for jute twine. As you may have noticed, I love numbers, so I thought, why not on the tree? πŸ™‚ The chalkboard balls are just inexpensive ornaments I bought at Walmart, spray-painted them with chalkboard paint, and wrote on them with white chalk pen. The darling little arrows are a new favorite. I found them at the Rebel Junk Holiday Market in Hillsboro, Oregon. They were made by the talented ladies at Roost Reimagined. The huge snowflakes tucked in here and there are from Real Deals in Salem, Oregon. I just love what they add to our sparse little beauty!

Sophie made it into almost every shot. πŸ˜‰ Little camera hog.

2015-12-07_0011

On the island this year, we cut a little tiny tree at a farm just down the road from our house. I’m sure the farmer thought I was crazy, but I love this little tree. It sits in this salvaged old drawer, painted by my talented friend Anne Nash.

2015-12-07_0012

Along with numbers, another obsession is chalkboards. When I saw these mini chalkboards at the craft store, I knew they had to be on my mini-tree! I love non-holiday type items on the tree. Sort of fun and a fresh take on Christmas. The little white tags were made with scrapbook paper of French poetry, since I felt like I needed a pop of white. So kitchen-islandy. πŸ˜‰

A red berry wreath brings a little festivity to the barn door.

2015-12-07_00162015-12-07_0018

The pops of red and fresh green are such a treat after months of dried up, crunchy wheat and such. πŸ˜‰ I guess that’s what makes holiday decorating so much fun…an excuse to change things up!

2015-12-07_0021

The dining nook is also part of this one big space, and things were kept more neutral here. Fresh greenery, buffalo check, and chalkboard. Yes. The perfect combination in my estimation. It screams cozy, humble, and casual…true love for this farm girl!

2015-12-07_0020

2015-12-07_0022

The ladder in the corner is a favorite. Such a fun area to style! I love old books, and displaying them “open” gives a fresh splash of creamy white to this area.

2015-12-07_0023

2015-12-07_0024

Oh, the mantel. I’ve had this old white gate out in my garage for awhile now…and when the holidays arrived, I knew it had to come inside. The white weathered paint, the “x” pattern…all of my favorite things!

2015-12-07_0025

The stockings were another Hobby Lobby find. I just embellished them with a little black check fabric, some greenery, and a quick stencil job to personalize them.

2015-12-07_0027

A pretty snowy tree in an old egg crate fills the corner without being too busy.

2015-12-07_0028

A fun little vignette for the coffee table, including a treasured snowman we’ve had for years. πŸ™‚

2015-12-07_0032

Here’s a close-up of the arrows made by Roost Reimagined that I told you about earlier. I mean, SO CUTE! They were only $2 each. That’s a lot of fun for $2.

Ever wish you could have the “movie” version of a Thanksgiving? A beautiful table, perfectly prepared food, time to sit and laugh with/enjoy your family? Well of course! It’s the American way, right? So we knock ourselves out to plan a delicious decadent menu, stay up until way too late decorating the table with our “holiday only” tableware, and when the day arrives, the STRESS kicks in. Up early to put the turkey in the oven. And then, ugh. Time to prepare 1,000 side dishes. You start washing, peeling, chopping, can-opening… oh, and by the way you forgot to get sour cream. Don’t look now but your guests will arrive in 15 minutes and you’re still wearing sweats and your hair is all “steamy” from opening the oven so many times. Yes, this holiday is SO RELAXING and FUN! As people arrive don’t you dare take time to hug or even wave…that dinner needs to magically arrive on the table ALL AT THE SAME TIME and piping hot, please.

Yikes! I’m stressed out just WRITING about it! This year, we decided on a different approach. Simplicity.

2015-11-25_0001

One night it just came to me. How could I prepare a Thanksgiving-ish meal but still enjoy my family and not STRESS about everything? Our take on Thanksgiving this year is what I’m calling “Thanksgiving Deli.” We roasted the turkey today (Wednesday), and my hubby came home on his lunch break to carve it, and put it in the fridge. Our menu will include fresh “deli” turkey sandwiches on the most delicious baguettes, my sister’s specialty green salad (IT ROCKS!!!), my mother-in-law’s fantastic pasta salad, potato chips (hey, it’s a deli theme!), and for dessert…my mom’s award winning apple pie. Unconventional? A little. Low-key and casual? A lot. A perfect way to enjoy the day, count our blessings, and be thankful for our family.

2015-11-25_0002

When it came to the decor, a simple “deli” theme was perfect here too…I covered the table with some cute “arrow” fabric I found on sale at Joann’s, complete with a butcher paper runner. So deli. πŸ™‚ The finishing touch was some dollar store hurricane candle holders and fresh herbs from Trader Joe’s ($1.99 each!) wrapped in a little burlap from my craft closet. I found the chalkboard place cards in the dollar section at Target (they were actually 6 for $3). So simple, so fresh, and so easy! (not to mention budget-friendly!) This might be my favorite tablescape ever. We’re craving some simplicity around here.

2015-11-25_0003

For big family gatherings, we flip our table around, add the leaves, and then extra tables are added as needed. Every random chair in the house/garage is called into action. I just can’t wait to have my family here this year…and actually get to ENJOY them. To TALK to them. To LAUGH with them. Not just barely see them over the boiling pot of potatoes.

2015-11-25_0004

2015-11-25_0006

2015-11-25_0005

The centerpiece on the kitchen island is a lot more simple too…low profile. To allow for plenty of socializing with the family in the kitchen. (My poor family usually has to peek around whatever crazy display I have going at the time! ha ha)

2015-11-25_00072015-11-25_0008

2015-11-25_0010

I put my daughter to work too…She does beautiful lettering, so she made little tags for the herbs. So cute! (and free!)

2015-11-25_0011

2015-11-25_0009

Whatever your Thanksgiving brings, I hope you get a moment to look around the room. Take it all in. Enjoy the living daylights out of your family. Because I don’t think the pilgrims were concerned about whether the sweet potatoes were heated all the way through or if the green bean casserole was a little too soupy. They were just THANKFUL.

Blessings to you this Thanksgiving, friends!

Oh I had the most fun yesterday. “Install” day is always enjoyable…seeing a project come together, hoping there are enough accessories, watching things take shape and become the client’s vision. Well this project was a guest bedroom. The client’s daughter recently went off to college, taking most everything with her, so it was pretty much a blank slate. With company scheduled to visit over the Thanksgiving holiday, it became crunch time! Our mission? To create a fresh, cozy, rustic-farmhousey look that would welcome friends and family and make them feel right at home.

2015-11-20_0005

Here’s a little before and after for you. We took the walls a little lighter, using Sherwin Williams “Urban Putty.” The rest was just filling the room with COZY! (My favorite!) The color scheme was inspired by the rug…you’ll see that in a second. I am loving this fresh blue! I hear it’s the color of the year. This beautiful “blessed” pillow, from bowsandburlap.com is the perfect welcoming touch on the bed, and this clock? Hello, statement piece! If you’re local, this big beauty came from Real Deals.

2015-11-20_0001

Ok, just LOOK. AT. THIS. RUG. It’s a little dark in this pic, but the fresh blue and green is just, well….unexpected! Especially for this neutral-loving girl! But, wow. The life it brought to the room was just amazing. A gorgeous burlap ruffled bedskirt is on the way, but sadly it hadn’t arrived yet. That final piece will really finish off the look and complete the cozy feel!

2015-11-20_0007

This little built-in desk became a great opportunity for some cute accessories and family memories. Texture was the key to this little alcove…the baskets, the burlap memo board, a pretty mercury glass candle holder-turned-vase, the shiny ceramic lamp, and of COURSE, a chalkboard…so fun.

2015-11-20_0006

Still need a fun little chair at the desk, but we’re well on our way to a welcoming space for holiday guests. And the best part? Happy clients. (Oh, and the commute wasn’t bad either…just look at this view! I had to snap a pic on my way home!

2015-11-20_0002

Are you kidding me? Seriously. The back roads of Oregon are just unbelievably stunning. A beautiful drive, wonderful clients, a gorgeous home, and a cozy new guest room. Now THAT’S a great Friday.
