I heard this quote yesterday, “Snow White never had a bad day.” Ummm, that’s because she’s a cartoon. But I know what was meant. Make every day a good day, right? Well, speaking of Snow White, as women our appearance can be such a big part of our day, unfortunately. In our heads.
Example: a good hair day? Great. Give it to me. Every day please. Nothing more empowering than a good hair day. Reality: these don’t happen very often. To me. If they happen to you, please tell us your secret. So let’s say your day starts off with a not-your-finest-work kind of hair day. Then you decide to not WASTE a cute outfit on not-great-hair. Then you look in the mirror, hate yourself a little more, and jump into your day. Just me? Oh my, I hope not.
The thing is, sometimes whether our hair day is good or not, we beat ourselves up all day about everything. Looks. Food choices. Status. Our homes. Our involvement level in our kids’ schools. Our competence in our jobs. Keeping up with the Joneses. We just can’t measure up, on our own. ON OUR OWN. Did you catch that?
I’m so thankful my identity is found in CHRIST. He created us all to be unique. So what happens when you compare yourself with your neighbor? That’s such a trap. Of course you’re not like her. You’re UNIQUE! Your identity is found in CHRIST! One of my favorite quotes is “Be yourself, everybody else is already taken.” So true! If you’re not being YOU, to your full potential, just think about what the world is missing.
I’d challenge you to do something different this week. When those negative thoughts start replaying in your head, make a conscious effort to stop them. Pray for God to show you your beautiful, unique qualities. Pray for opportunities to use the gifts He’s given you. Think about how you can be a blessing to others. Did you notice the progression? It’s all about turning those ugly, selfish thoughts into being FREE to let God use you how He intended!
Friends, this could be revolutionary. What if we took all of the wasted time we spend on degrading ourselves, and turned it for good? Looked for ways to love others? Whoa. It could be amazing. Last night a sweet friend I haven’t seen in awhile stopped by with the most beautiful chocolate cupcakes, and the sweetest card. Just because. What??? That friend, who is so busy in her own life, and has plenty of things to do on a Tuesday night, took time out of her crazy schedule to stop by and see ME. Just because. Made my week. It was a lesson to me as well. What can I do for someone this week? What can you do? This could be the most joyful week of the year!
As part of the fun, if you come up with a great, simple idea of how you can be a blessing to a friend this week, post it in the comments below. Let’s do this!
Amanda Haynie - I love this! You are such a great inspiration! I need to get out there and make it a great day! I’m picking up my granddaughter, Olivia, from school. She wants to cook! She is a true blessing in my life! Have a great day!
yellowprairieint - Love it Amanda! Enjoy your special time together!
Katie Rowley - What great advice and a great reminder!! Being unique and taking care of others are really what it is all about! We are all so lucky to have our virtual communities to inspire and challenge us but we shouldn’t ever let it take over or control our lives! Being centered in Christ allows us to be unique and think of others a bit more effortlessly. Thanks for this beautiful post!
yellowprairieint - Love that, Katie…having it be a little more effortless to think of others. Thanks for stopping by!
Candice - Such a great message! Thank you for sharing and encouraging the positive!! The Internet and the world in general needs more positive stuffs! I’m making cookies today and am going to share them with my new neighbors.
yellowprairieint - Oh your neighbors will love that! Way to go!
Wendy Jo Trigsted - This is darling! I love your heart…and I couldn’t agree more! I have a friend who has been sick and in bed since August. YES…SINCE AUGUST. I have nothing to complain about…a cute care package is going out to her today…equipped with chocolate and fun wrapping paper! Loving others is a blessing!
yellowprairieint - Oh Wendy, that will brighten that sweet friend’s day so much. How thoughtful!
Leslie - I have a friend who has been going through some rough times. She has had little time for herself lately! I’m going to pack up a little “fall love package” and drop it at her porch! Thank you for reminding me to get out there and bless someone!
yellowprairieint - Leslie, that sounds wonderful! What a blessing you are!
Alicia - Mail a card or two with a note stating thanks for being a friend!… It will brighten anyone’s day?
yellowprairieint - I agree Alicia! It’s always a treat to find something personal in the mailbox…not just junk mail and bills! 🙂
Emily Tate - Physical appearance has never been too important to me, because the appearance we had nothing to do with creating is something that will eventually fade. Whether good or bad we cannot take any credit for having it. The real beauty lies in someone’s heart and soul, and is something that will shine through even when all else fades. My friends are the most beautiful people I have ever laid eyes on. When some asks me “isn’t she so beautiful?” My response is almost always “I’m not sure I haven’t met them.” This response drives my daughter’s crazy but it the truth. I can’t decide until I know a person.
yellowprairieint - So true, Emily! The heart is what determines beauty…someone reflecting God’s love is always beautiful! 🙂
Ali - Thank you, thank you, thank you for the encouragement and inspiration. Many of my mama friends (and I!) have been feeling overwhelmed with all of the changes that come with acclimating to fall schedules. Sounds to me like a good reason to brighten some days with a plate of cookies, and a good way to have some time with the kiddos in the process.
PS–I’m new to your blog, but am so inspired by the warmth and love of your home. I’m a farm girl myself, and I agree–it’s just something that sticks with you. 🙂
Pam Foster - Hi Honey!
I LOVED your home tour! It is soooo good! I loved what you wrote and how you decorated every room! You know how I love being in your home with all of you! Thank you so much for all the wonderful things you do to make your home so inviting and warm! I also loved what you said at the end about looking beyond ourselves to see how God wants to be love to others through us each day!
Thank you! I needed to hear that again today!
I LOVE you and can’t wait to show this to Dad!
God bless you and have a great day!
Love,
Mom
angela betlewicz - WOW! this is amazingly stunning! Looks perfect!
