A couple months ago, my sweet Texas client texted me with a proposal. (Remember Mike & Christie? Had the pleasure of styling their entire home this last May…you can see the whole thing here!) Wellllll Christie had this fun idea to have me come back down, decorate her home for fall, and then do a design project for her sweet sister. Ummm, let me check. YES! We booked the flight, ordered some fun items for her sis (everything was kept a surprise!), and waited for the day to come.
This last Wednesday was the day. As soon as I arrived at the airport in Dallas, we were off to get pumpkins and a few other essentials. (Do we look excited, or what?) We made a quick stop at her sister’s to see what we still needed…and then home to Christie’s. Naturally the first order of business was to hold the chickens. π
Day 2 was our shopping day for sis. We grabbed some amazing breakfast tacos (have you ever? like. heaven.), scooped her up, and set off for the fun!
We started here, an adorable shop in Flower Mound, Texas, called Southern Charm Cottage. Oh, did we ever find some goodies!
Next stop, HomeGoods/TJ Maxx…and let me just say, when there’s an amazing teepee at the front door, you can’t walk by without trying it out. π
We made several other quick stops, and by the time we were done shopping, there was hardly room in the car for US! (This is Christie’s sweet sis, Katherine.)
After a full day of shopping, I couldn’t wait to decorate Christie’s porch for fall. She had purchased an amazing vintage flower cart that was giving me all-kindsa-heart-eyes…I was anxious to deck that baby out with some mums & pumpkins! Such a unique piece!
Can I just travel door-to-door and decorate porches? This was a blast! (Ok, that’s one amazing business model if I do say so myself! haha)
Day 3 was a FEAST for the eyes, if you’re a junk/vintage/antique lover. This whole trip was born out of the idea of attending this show together, “Vintage Market Days of Denton.” We arrived at opening…and oh my. SO MUCH GOODNESS.
They had several adorable photo booth areas set up…aaaaand since we LOVE crazy pics, we were alllll over it. π
We came away with some awesome pieces for Christie’s place, and boy. We oohed and aahed all over that building, and gasped at the cuteness on many occasions. Now that’s a great sale! We grabbed some burgers for lunch, and headed home to add some “fall” to the INSIDE of Christie’s house. Wanna see?
First up? The. mantel. This shiplap covered wall is one of my favorite spots in the house, and a treat to decorate (inside scoop: I actually decorated it twice. The first time it featured some faux pumpkins that just didn’t look realistic enough…so it was scrapped and after some cheez-its and Diet Coke I was ready to try again. haha).
Simple. Rustic. Authentic.
This living room…still one of my ALL-TIME faves.
This perfectly perfect little rustic stool (we found it at Vintage Market Days!) is so darling in the entry way.
The kitchen table needed a little fall fun as well, and I adore this scale.
This gorgeous light green pumpkin is so pretty on the island!
Also LOVE the pretty little fabric pumpkins we found at Vintage Market Days, made by Cara Howell (@farmhousedesigns on Instagram). Cara is the sweetest and it was so much fun to meet her!
Day 4 was “Install Day” at Katherine’s. A special day like that calls for a power breakfast…sooooo, Kolaches and donuts it was! π I was pretty excited to try my first Kolache (yum!)…and the blueberry cake donut was NOT GOOD. Just kidding. It was life-changing. π
At Katherine’s our goal was to add storage for their kiddo’s toys, and bring a light and bright feeling to the room. Here’s a little “before” shot:
aaaaand after:
The room was repainted prior to my arrival, the color is now Valspar “Coconut Milk” (sound familiar? We have the same wall color in our home!). It’s a great light neutral, and worked well with the warm tones in the fireplace tile and carpet. The area rug (find it here) brings some fun pattern and interest to the room, and defines the seating area. The mantel decor was simplified to support our “light and bright” theme, and the new built-in shelves in the TV niche are so airy and light (built by Mike, Christie’s hubby. Didn’t he do an amazing job?). There are tons of cute baskets around the room, which hold the kids toys, puzzles, and games.
We added some pillows to their leather sofas to help carry our colors around the room, and to soften the look. Window treatments, hanging nice and high, really add interest and height to the room. It was really amazing to see how they brought instant warmth. As soon as they were up, it was like a big HUG! π
Here’s another angle, just for fun.
Here’s a pic of the entryway “before.”
We added some new rugs, artwork, a new light fixture, and a stenciled niche. Simple, fresh, and clean!
It was a long day, but sooo worth it. Mike and Christie worked like crazy to help pull this off, and we had the best time doing it.
Day 5 was dreamy for this farm girl. Christie and her sweet daughters took me for a fun golf-cart ride around their back pasture, and we picked the most amazing wildflowers from the prairie. Aaaaaand, they’re yellow. How perfect. π (Did you catch it? Yellow Prairie? Anyone?) π
We stopped and said hi to their chickens and ponies…I mean, stop. Could this day get any better??
And to top it all off, one more craft project before I caught my plane back to Oregon. We had purchased this cute chippy fence picket at Vintage Market Days for $4. It was begging for some stenciled words, so we felt “Fresh Eggs” would be appropriate, and pointed it toward the chicken coop. Bam. π
The pretty fresh-cut wildflowers were added to the kitchen island vignette, and it was time to go.
Guys. What a blessing it was to work with this sweet family again. An absolute treasured time. I’m not sure how I got so lucky, but I’m super thankful. I love how God puts little sparkles in our path at different times in life. Yes, we all have to deal with the not-so-great stuff. But the sparkles. Those are my favorite. And this family? SPARKLE-CITY! π π π
Until next time, Texas! <3
Hi friend! I’m so glad you stopped by today. Come in, have a seat, and let’s talk FALL!
What inspires you this time of year? Let’s be honest, I was feeling a little overwhelmed about the whole thing. With a crazy work schedule, a busy family, and not enough hours in the day, I was wondering when I would have time to rip my entire house apart, and reinvent each area with a nod to the season. And then it hit me. The words that have been in my head for awhile now…my theme for fall, “Gather ‘Round.” I love these words because they make me think about what’s really important this time of year. Gathering with those we love most. It’s cozy nights at home in front of the fire. It’s movie night with the family and as many comfy blankets and pillows as we can find. It’s hosting family gatherings and holidays. Thinking about all of that made me WANT to decorate for fall…to create a backdrop for the memories we’ll make in the coming months.
So, come on in and I’d love to show you a few favorite spots…and how I decided to go back to my farm-girl roots, using what I already had, mixed with a few side-of-the-road finds.
Oh, hello fall entryway. I don’t know why, but this combo makes my heart sing. The “Pacific Crest Trail” sign is borrowed from the upstairs TV room, and I think it likes its new place of honor, over this divinely rustic gate. Is that a word? Divinely. Well, it is. I think I want to marry this gate. The “A” pumpkin is just your run-of-the-mill orange faux pumpkin, spray painted white, and stenciled. I made it a few years ago, and I was surprised I liked it here…but that’s always the fun part. Just when you think something is headed to the garage sale box…you fall in love with it again! (*Ahem*, remember? Women change their minds a lot.)
I took this pic from inside my office (obviously), and it’s not really decorated for fall. But look! I cleaned for you! (Every square inch of carpet is usually covered in bags and items going to client’s homes…you’re welcome.) π
See that old white gate on the mantel? It’s holding my absolute FAVORITE thing this year. Rose hips. Here’s why. A couple weeks ago, my hubby and I were out in the country junking, when all of a sudden, I saw them. At 60 mph. ROSE HIPS in the most glorious orangey red color. “PULL OVER! WE HAVE TO STOP!” I told him. He looked so confused, and the poor guy had NO IDEA what rose hips were, but he stopped, God bless him. He scrambled down into a deep ditch as I stood up by the road “instructing” him on which ones to cut, ha ha…my husband. He is the BEST sport. And hey, FREE decor!
The rest of the mantel is kept pretty simple, so the beauty of the road-side rose hips can be appreciated. Here’s a close-up.
DON’T YOU LOVE THEM? Ok, don’t tell the gate by the front door, but now I want to marry THESE rose hips.
The hutch got a fun little remix on top: clean, simple, and white. This “Farmer’s Market” sign, made by my sweet friend Jolia @farmfreshhomestead, has been alllllll over the house…but I’m loving it HERE for now! And a bucket full of beautiful Oregon hops is a fun pop of greenery.
I must say, coming downstairs to a completely restyled house this morning was such a treat! It all feels new again! It’s weird, because often times I cringe at the thought of breaking up a vignette I really like…but ya know what? I NEVER regret it! There’s something wonderful about letting your eyes take in a fresh new look.
This table was desperate for a change-up, and every time I walk by, it makes me smile. The screen across the back almost makes it feel like a potting bench, and the little white crate was found at an estate sale last spring for $1…someone else’s trash is MY treasure!
The dining table was kept pretty simple, with this fun old galvanized box, “grateful” sign by my sweet friend Caroline @vineandbranchestx, a beautiful pumpkin from Bauman Farms in Gervais, Oregon, some hops, and of course, the road-side rose hips!
The ladder in the corner holds this cute Union Pacific sign, a birthday gift from my hubby, and more beautiful rose hips.
A rusty old mailbox filled with hops = perfect farmhouse kitchen vignette. Right? π
I shouldn’t tell you this, but my sink is full of dishes here. I just made sure none were showing in the pic. π Hey, we were late for church and I was trying to finish photographing! The “Fall” sign is a board I may have “salvaged” from a builder’s trash pile…what can I say, I like FREE! π
The chalkboard reflects our theme, of course…and the simplicity of it is just what I was envisioning from the moment we found those rose hips. A subtle backdrop to a season of soaking up every moment of family, loved ones, and life.
Thanks for stopping by. It was so much fun chatting with you, and taking a minute to “Gather ‘Round!”
Ever get that gnawing feeling like you NEED to decorate your porch for fall…TODAY? Oh good, me too. Yesterday I woke up with THAT feeling. I knew I had a few free hours in the afternoon, and I saw the chance to get it done. I wasn’t sure what to do this year, and I hadn’t had any big epiphanies yet…but no matter. That would come. Just GET THE PUMPKINS, JANNA.
I called my favorite local farm (Bauman’s Farm in Gervais, Oregon) and asked if they had pumpkins yet. “None picked,” she said. Hmmm. I started having visions of picking my own pumpkins, which was EVEN better. Sure enough, the great folks at Bauman’s allowed me to come out and pick my own, and it was the HIGHLIGHT of this farm girl’s week.
These little white pumpkins will be used inside the house…but hey, ya gotta get ’em while you can!
Here’s the start of my “pumpkin pile”…How GORGEOUS are these???
We went on to Al’s Garden Center in Woodburn to get cornstalks, hay, and mums, and we were all set. On the drive home, it happened. No really, IT HAPPENED. The epiphany I had been waiting for. Yesssss. That $5 ladder we got at an estate sale over the weekend? Perfect centerpiece for our fall porch.
Here’s most of the haul from the farm and Al’s, just sitting there looking pretty. Time to roll up the sleeves and dig in! I must say, fall porch decorating is really the most FUN porch decorating there is, because it’s all about ACTUAL stuff from the farm. π It was about 1000 degrees on my porch yesterday, but hey, time for some AUTUMN up in here!
Aaaaand here she is. And the best part? The only “new” item (besides the farm freshness) is this perfectly old rickety ladder for 5 bucks, as I mentioned above. That’s my kinda budget. The rug can be found here, it’s a great indoor-outdoor rug from Wayfair, and even though it’s been blasted with late afternoon sun since April, it hasn’t faded at all! I made the pillows last fall, using outdoor fabric to prevent fading, and then stenciled our address numbers on the inset (you KNOW how much I love numbers!). The “gather ’round” sign is just the back of another sign I already had, and I talked my daughter into doing the lettering for me. π I love the challenge of decorating with what we already have, or repurposing old things. One of my favorite things about this particular vignette is the lights. It really brings some sparkle to the crunchiness of fall. π
We get some pretty gusty wind on our front porch, so everything is tied down…the sign, the corn stalks, and the ladder is weighted at the bottom. I mean, we don’t want a call from our sweet neighbors telling us our junky old ladder is on top of their car. π
In the front doorway, some corn stalks, hay, and pumpkins were just the ticket. One of my favorite old white chairs is the perfect spot to plop this pretty trio of Cinderella pumpkins. Nature is the best place to shop for fall decor!
So how ’bout you? What are your plans for your front porch this season? What can you repurpose or reimagine? If you’re like me, giving yourself a little window of time and a deadline is a fun challenge…it really makes you see things in a new way!
Here are a couple last tips:
1. Keep it simple. Let your “focal point” take center stage. This ladder was a fun option because of its rustic qualities, but MOST of all because of the height! I can’t lean anything against the wall behind these chairs due to the windows, so the ladder provided me with a framework for decor.
2. Pattern mixing brings interest. I decided to stick with a tight color palette…black, white, and orange (I know, so unusual for fall! haha), but the different patterns make it fun and the addition of some burlap-colored items grounds it, giving that rustic appeal.
3. Break the rules. You may have heard this from me before, but this rug is only a 4 x 6…a tad small for the area. You can see the chairs don’t quite fit on it, but guess what? I’m not losing any sleep over it. I adore it anyway. π
4. Go look in your garage or in the back of that one closet. I bet you have something just waiting to be repurposed for your porch! I can’t wait to hear what you find!
Pretty, right?
(If you’re a newsletter subscriber, you’ve already heard this first portion…feel free to skip ahead! If you’re not a newsletter subscriber, why not? π Sign up to hear all the latest news!) Oh my goodness. Two words for the events of this week. CURTAIN DEBACLE. Ohhhh friends. I cleared my schedule last Monday to sew new curtains for our living room. I shopped several fabric stores in preparation…taking lots of time to find JUST the right fabric. I finally settled on the above floral, thinking it was perfect for fall, but also good for our overall scheme. The grayish-brown background was great, and the warm tones in the flowers called my name. It seemed a bit busy, so a 36″ burlap skirt at the bottom of each panel solved that. Yep, these were going to be a winner.
The process of sewing is never as smooth as you think it will be. Am I right? I mean, I’m no seamstress, but straight lines? Sure. Totally do-able.
An hour or so in, I’m thinking that if I have to thread that bobbin ONE MORE TIME, I might just throw the sewing machine out the back door. But WAIT, Janna….it’s ok, it will all be worth it, because these curtains are going to be amazing. The satisfaction of a job well-done is what it’s all about. Yes, the burlap is making my eyes itch, and I’m covered in fuzz, but hey, these curtains are gonna be great.
After multiple interruptions, needles threaded, seams ripped out and re-sewn, the curtains are done. Cue the Lion King music. As I raise the panels up to put them on the curtain rods, I might as well be holding baby Simba. So proud.
Ok, let’s just stand back and take a look at these beauties.
HOLD IT ONE. HOT. SECOND.
These curtains are HORRIFIC! I can’t even look! So TRULY terrible, I can’t even think of enough adjectives to describe them. Ok, I’ll try: overly busy. “W A R M” in a “giving me hot-flashes” kind of way. Claustrophobic. The ugliest panels I have ever seen. Just shoot me now.
Wanna see? Ok, since I know I can trust you…here’s a peak at the train wreck that was hanging in my living room last Monday night. π
You’re getting hot just looking at it, aren’t you?
Told ya. Terrible. But hey, here’s what I learned.
We all make decorating mistakes. When I went back and analyzed what was NOT working, I realized something important. The fabric looks beautiful when LAYING FLAT. But when you gather it up, like a curtain, not so much. The pattern becomes really busy….and then letting sunlight come through those yellow flowers? HOLY WARMNESS. I’m getting a kidney infection just looking at it. Β Good news? This fabric can be repurposed into beautiful pillows. Other good news? I know what I DON’T want. And I’m excited to share with you what I came up with…WITHOUT spending an arm and a leg. The (horrible) curtain fabric was a bit spendy. Well, at least to me…but I like INEXPENSIVE projects that look like a million bucks. Who’s with me? Ok, drum roll for the simple, fresh new look…
This idea has been rolling around in my head for awhile, but I completely forgot about it until, well, the debacle. And as you know, necessity is the mother of invention…and I wasn’t about to spend another big chunk of change on new fabric. The solution? A $26.00 drop cloth from Lowe’s. Here’s another view, a little closer, before we talk details…
The possibilities are ENDESS with this type of project! Our ceilings are 10′, so this was a perfect cost-effective solution. The drop cloth I bought was 9′ x 12′. I cut it in half, which gave me 2 panels, 4.5′ x 12′ (which I later hemmed once I knew the exact length needed)…AND THEN. My favorite part. The stenciling. I knew I wanted to stencil something meaningful onto the curtains. A Bible verse? A favorite song? I asked my hubby and kids if they had any ideas, and my daughter helped me zero in on the perfect thing, one of my all-time fave worship songs, “Cornerstone” by Hillsong United. Yes. Even though most people will have no idea what it says, since it’s all gathered together, I know. My family knows. And that just makes it even more special. Wanna know something cool? When I started sewing the first hem on the unfinished side of the drop cloth, “Cornerstone” came on the radio. Chills!
What could you put on a drop cloth curtain? A favorite quote? A decorative stencil? Even an oversize buffalo check would be DARLING! Ok, maybe that’s my next thing! (I’m glad we had this brainstorming session!)
Here are the easy steps to a custom drop cloth curtain:
1.Β Measure the size you want, cut drop cloth, and hem rough edges (if you don’t sew, you could use iron-on seam tape!).
2. Sew or use iron-on seam tape to create a rod pocket at the top.
3. Stencil! Here’s a pic of how I got started.
Covering my island with a plastic drop cloth to protect the counter top, I then used blue tape to give me a “level” guide. Be sure to use a very light hand when stenciling, if you want a more “worn” look.
4. Use a ruler and tape to mark your next row. I spaced each line about 8.5″.
When I ran out of space on a line mid-word, I made the executive decision to just continue the word on the next line. Hey, it’s your project! Do it however you choose! π
5. Remove the blue tape, and voila! Ready for hanging! (I always hang my curtains BEFORE hemming, pin the hem in place, and then take them back down to hem…that way you don’t end up with HIGH-WATERS! π
So thrilled with the outcome. They’re light, neutral, they match any color (so they won’t need to be changed out for our RED Christmas decor), and they were super inexpensive. Best of all, they hold some very meaningful words.
The new curtains inspired some new pillows (no, this isn’t the original curtain fabric. Too soon. ;))
Aaaaand the sofa got some new pillows as well. I thought this corally orange color would be fun for fall…whenever we’re ready to let go of summer around here. π
This might have been another DIY type blog post, or a fun story about curtains gone wrong. But I think it’s actually much more than that, at least it was for me. Things don’t always go perfectly in life…even when you think you’re on to something really great. The true test comes when you fall flat on your face. What will you do? Give up? I know it sounds silly, but the horrible curtains defeated me for a sec. It took me a couple hours before I could make the decision to regroup. To see the situation in a new light. This was not a failure, but merely a chance to think of something even better. And just MAYBE, the “Curtain Debacle” was a lesson. A beautiful chance to try again.
“Cornerstone”
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus name
Christ alone; cornerstone
Weak made strong; in the Saviour’s love
Through the storm, He is Lord
Lord of all
When Darkness seems to hide His face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
Christ alone; cornerstone
Weak made strong; in the Saviour’s love
Through the storm, He is Lord
Lord of all
He is Lord
Lord of all
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless stand before the throne.
Once upon a time two friends drove down to Medford, Oregon on a sunny Friday morning. They found some great stuff. They drove home.
Ohhhh you guys know me better than that. I have to share DETAILS with you, because it was so amazing! Have you ever been to the Barnstormer’s Vintage Fair? This was my first time, and do you want to know what I REALLY think?…..wait for it…..PUT IT ON YOUR CALENDAR FOR NEXT YEAR. Like now.
So yesterday morning, my sweet friend Anne (@pedalhomeinteriors on Instagram…are you following her? SHE. IS. AMAZING.) picked me up, bright and early. She had the console of her SUV stocked with our favorite road trip snacks, and we chatted all the way down to Medford, about a 4 hour drive. We were so excited to see what the Barnstormer sale had in store…how many vendors would they have? What would the prices be like? Would this trip be worth it? We talked about what we were looking for, and then we chatted about a million other things, as friends do. We rolled into town and stopped for a quick lunch.
Yep. That’s right. In-N-Out Burger. Totally worth fighting the crowds (there’s only ONE of these in allllll of Oregon).
And then. The sale.
Here we are in line…oh, the anticipation! It was a super hot afternoon in the Medford area. Summer at its best. We waited about 40 minutes for the doors to open, and then, IT. WAS. ON. Bring on the junk! The farmhouse treasures! The one-of-a-kind goodness that is what Barnstormer’s is ALL about!
I have to say, some things totally surprised me. The prices were AMAZING. Great bargains, fun, unexpected finds, and the sweetest people. We made our way through the entire sale, bought some great stuff, took a huge load to the car, and then did another pass through the booths. Once our initial “frenzied first trip through” was over, we went around again and saw things we had missed the first time. We made a few more key purchases, and headed out to get some dinner.
Soooo? Want a little preview of what we found?
Here are a few of the goodies we brought home. Most of my items will be coming with me to my Pop-Up Shop at Garden Gallery Iron Works in Hubbard, Oregon on Saturday, Aug. 20, 10am-noon. You are going to LOVE this stuff!!! (Trust me, I’m having a hard time parting with ALL of it.)
This morning, we got up and headed for home…when THIS caught our eye…
I mean, we HAD to stop, right?? We ended up hitting a few fun garage sales on our way home.
Oh man, these kinds of adventures with friends are the best. We talked and laughed LATE into the night, did some awesome shopping, and loved every second of our Junkin’ Adventure. Can’t wait ’til next year! See you there!
