I heard this quote yesterday, “Snow White never had a bad day.” Ummm, that’s because she’s a cartoon. But I know what was meant. Make every day a good day, right? Well, speaking of Snow White, as women our appearance can be such a big part of our day, unfortunately. In our heads.
Example: a good hair day? Great. Give it to me. Every day please. Nothing more empowering than a good hair day. Reality: these don’t happen very often. To me. If they happen to you, please tell us your secret. So let’s say your day starts off with a not-your-finest-work kind of hair day. Then you decide to not WASTE a cute outfit on not-great-hair. Then you look in the mirror, hate yourself a little more, and jump into your day. Just me? Oh my, I hope not.
The thing is, sometimes whether our hair day is good or not, we beat ourselves up all day about everything. Looks. Food choices. Status. Our homes. Our involvement level in our kids’ schools. Our competence in our jobs. Keeping up with the Joneses. We just can’t measure up, on our own. ON OUR OWN. Did you catch that?
I’m so thankful my identity is found in CHRIST. He created us all to be unique. So what happens when you compare yourself with your neighbor? That’s such a trap. Of course you’re not like her. You’re UNIQUE! Your identity is found in CHRIST! One of my favorite quotes is “Be yourself, everybody else is already taken.” So true! If you’re not being YOU, to your full potential, just think about what the world is missing.
I’d challenge you to do something different this week. When those negative thoughts start replaying in your head, make a conscious effort to stop them. Pray for God to show you your beautiful, unique qualities. Pray for opportunities to use the gifts He’s given you. Think about how you can be a blessing to others. Did you notice the progression? It’s all about turning those ugly, selfish thoughts into being FREE to let God use you how He intended!
Friends, this could be revolutionary. What if we took all of the wasted time we spend on degrading ourselves, and turned it for good? Looked for ways to love others? Whoa. It could be amazing. Last night a sweet friend I haven’t seen in awhile stopped by with the most beautiful chocolate cupcakes, and the sweetest card. Just because. What??? That friend, who is so busy in her own life, and has plenty of things to do on a Tuesday night, took time out of her crazy schedule to stop by and see ME. Just because. Made my week. It was a lesson to me as well. What can I do for someone this week? What can you do? This could be the most joyful week of the year!
As part of the fun, if you come up with a great, simple idea of how you can be a blessing to a friend this week, post it in the comments below. Let’s do this!
Yep, it’s a cross-walk.
When you walk across a cross walk, do you stop a few feet in? Or go halfway across and then turn back? Of course not. You commit, you step out, you walk across.
Oh if only it was that easy when it comes to life’s decisions. While I always pray about big decisions, and TRY to remember to turn things over to the Lord, once I actually step OUT, I question Him! I walk so hesitantly, I want to turn around…or step back when things are uncomfortable. And NEW things are ALWAYS uncomfortable. Why do I do this, time after time? Well, simple answer: I’m human. I start thinking I’m in control of my own life and it’s all up to me. Nope.
Last night I reminded my son that he needed to make a sandwich for his lunch, that way he wouldn’t be in a hurry in the morning. And then I reminded him again. And then just IN CASE he didn’t hear me, or realize the value in my suggestion, I reminded him again. This morning, I heard him running around like crazy trying to get out the door to school on time. And he didn’t take his lunch. Because he was going OUT to lunch with his friends. It’s just like me to focus so hard on the one dumb little detail, the sandwich. Oh my gosh, the world will END if you don’t make your sandwich RIGHT NOW. Well, the sandwich didn’t matter, because it wasn’t part of the plan. How many times do we do this in our lives with God? We pray about one thing, and then remind Him again and again about how things need to go. What if that one thing isn’t part of the plan? And there’s actually something WAY BETTER than a sandwich?
They call it “stepping out in faith” for a reason. It’s. Not. Easy. On a human level. But we have to remember that He knows the plan. He knows the discomfort we experience when we don’t know the exact path, and all of the ups and downs we may encounter. You know how they say “Enjoy the ride?” Kinda hard to enjoy a ride when you’re focused on every little problematic scenario that MIGHT arise.
Now. Now I’m ready. I’m striving to get out of my own head. To step out in faith, cross the street, and every other street He puts before me. To stop being wrapped up in dumb little details that don’t matter. Friends, Jesus LOVES us! That’s what matters! He has CHOSEN us. He has a PLAN for us. If only. If only we’ll stop worrying about the sandwich.
So, welcome to my pantry. I NEVER EEEEEEEVER show this counter top to aaaaaanyone. Why? Because it’s the biggest catch-all surface in our house. We’re talkin’ piles of mail, receipts, bobby pins, pennies, phone messages, school papers, ummm ya. It’s shameful. Yesterday I decided it was time to take my pantry back. For cuteness.
First problem. The memo board hanging above this counter was only adding to the mess. So, goodbye messy board. I had a vision of a huge chalkboard that could list the meals for the week. Ok, don’t laugh. I said it could LIST the meals for the week. I didn’t say I was going to COOK them. But hey, this just might inspire me to get domestic.
Which brings me to the second problem. This huge chalkboard I was envisioning. Uhhh, let me check. Nope, don’t have one of those laying around. What I DID have was an old automotive oil drip pan. I picked it up at a cute sale months ago for just a few bucks…wasn’t sure what I would do with it, until today. I taped the edges off with painter’s tape, and using a foam roller, I rolled on a couple coats of chalkboard paint, well 3 to be exact. The whole process only took about 30 minutes, since the sun was out and the paint dried quickly. Voila. Super cute, huge chalkboard. Hardly any investment.
See that grey box on the floor? I put casters on it, and it will be the perfect catch-all for my work stuff. There’s another one on the right side as well, and that one stores the sports drink stash for my teenage son. Because sports drink is not cute. And I’m taking my pantry back for cuteness.
Ok this Mercantile sign. Could it be aaaaaany more perfect in this spot? This was made by my sweet friend Jenny, at Down Grace Lane (If you’re not on Instagram, her Etsy shop is called byjenn2007). I love the crisp, clean look of it.
I sewed the window valance a few months back, using fade-proof outdoor fabric on a tension rod. I’m not much of a seamstress, but this was so basic. I created a pattern out of construction paper, to get the shape right, then just cut it out and stitched it up! Sewing machines are so user-friendly these days. If I can figure it out, ANYONE can. Once you get the needle threaded. And the bobbin threaded. And the iron set up. And you find your just-for-fabric scissors (your kids used them to cut 100 pieces of construction paper). And then you take a quick bathroom break so you can focus on your project. Oh, and just change the load of wash over real quick. But ya, sewing is so easy.
Before you think I’m so super organized and my pantry is perfect, I must admit, there’s one wall of ungreatness left in this room. Directly behind me is a freezer and lots of shelves with welllll, we’ll leave that for another time. Maybe next year. For now, I’ll enjoy THIS side. The side I’m taking back for cuteness.
Welcome! Or at least that’s what I HOPE my porch says.
Let’s face it, after a long, busy summer my porch was looking a little, uhhh, sad. Dead flowers, faded pillows, you know the drill. I’ve been looking forward to giving my porch some attention, and yesterday was my window of opportunity. A few days ago I put in my reservation with my hubby for a trip to the farm. Yes, reservation. You know, when you lay the groundwork for a trip to his not-so-favorite-place on the day of a FOOTBALL game. Well, he’s the best, and he agreed.
Picture this. A perfectly warm, sunny September day, a beautiful drive in the country, and a stop for burritos on the way. Yes, all was going well until we arrived at Β Bauman’s farm and *gasp* there were NO white pumpkins. At least not any that were picked and ready to be sold. Lucky for us, the owner of the farm was there, and she Β said, “Well, let’s go pick some pumpkins!” Talk about great customer service! Fast forward 20 minutes and a whirlwind pumpkin picking adventure…and our truck was loaded with the most beautiful white pumpkins you’ve ever seen (most of which are reserved for my indoor decorating…I decided the pop of orange was fun for the porch). And BONUS, picking them myself was the best part of the experience! Talk about the ultimate treasure hunt. For those 20 minutes I was a kid again.
So to me the most important part of the fall look is the pumpkins/hay bales/corn stalks, you know. Stuff not made by MAN. But let’s get real, cute pillows for the adirondack chairs have been on my shopping list. This. Aint. Easy. Someone could make fade-resistant outdoor pillows for fall and make a killing. They just don’t exist. At least not locally. So, when you can’t find it, make it, right? Ya. Easier said than done. I stood in the outdoor fabric aisle for about 25 minutes. Nothing was screaming, “I need to be on your porch!” I mean, not even close. It all looked so fabric-store-ish. Ugh. I took a deep breath and a light bulb went off. Ohhhhhh! Just do a combo of two fabrics, and add some numbers for a graphic punch! I used our address numbers, because I thought that would be cute for the porch, and because it will make everyone wonder why I love 17 and 64. π
Can we talk about this polka dot pumpkin? I’m in love. I picked this up at a local sale a few weeks ago, it was made by my talented friends Matt & Emily at The Missing Piece Rustic Decor. The other little sign is one I painted last year, on a scrap of wood that may or may not have been from a builder’s trash pile. Hey, there’s a lot of construction happening in my neighborhood. It’s better than Home Depot up in here. And let me reiterate, it was found in a TRASH PILE. Don’t go getting all judgey. Sheesh. π
Aaaaand there you have it. The fall porch. All fresh and well-loved again. So how about you? Have you given any thought to your porch? Does it say “Welcome?” Let’s do this! Bust out the broom, freshen up those flower pots, pop a couple ‘o pumpkins out there, and boost your curb appeal x1000. It might just be the nicest thing you’ve done for yourself in a WHILE. Happy decorating!
Does this ever happen to you? Do you have that ONE ROOM that you just CAN’T get a vision for?
This was my challenge. The master bedroom. Often times we leave this room to the very last in our decorating process. All of the leftovers are in the master. I mean, when you invite people over, they probably don’t see this room. So we focus all of our attention on the main living areas, and call it good.
One problem. Other people might not see your room on a daily basis, but YOU do. YOU need a place to rest and recharge. YOU need a place free of clutter. And subconsciously, a little attention to detail in this place can do wonders.
So how do you get inspired? Ask yourself some simple questions. What kind of feeling do you want in your room? What style feels like YOU? What can you repurpose and remix to create the look you want?
I must admit, even these questions were not enough to get me motivated. This spring our home was scheduled to be photographed for a magazine (Prairie Style Β Magazine, coming out in November!). I was given a list of rooms the editor wanted for the shoot…and ummm, I had a sick feeling in my stomach when I read the bottom of the list. Master bedroom. Yikes. And to add to the pressure, she wanted some quick iPhone shots within a week so she could preview the room. I had a quick pep talk with myself, and blocked out my schedule for a “rush” client. Me.
Walking through the aisles of HomeGoods, I didn’t have the normally happy feeling I have when I’m there. I felt burdened. I felt hopeless. Dumb, I know. But I had no idea where the inspiration was going to come from. And then, I walked around the corner and saw the most darling little metal table. It was 100% me. This one little find started the whole thing. I realized I was making it so much harder than it had to be.
The look I wanted was restful, tone-on-tone, cozy, and farmhouse, in a fresh modern way. Our nightstands were fine, but they were black. I had plans to paint them with chalk paint, but when I saw a couple cans of spray paint in my garage cabinet, I thought, “Why not?” Those babies were painted in about 15 minutes. Now that’s my kind of project. After painting them, I slightly distressed the edges with medium grit sand paper and did a light wash of super diluted white chalk paint, just so they didn’t look so “freshly painted.” Can I tell you something? Just making this one little change did WONDERS for the room.
Next up, curtains. I wanted something simple, to go with my restful look. I remembered some curtain panels I had from our last house, and thought I’d give them a try. These were plain white panels I purchased from Ikea and then painted 18″ stripes with latex wall paint, in a shade darker than our wall color. Lucky for me our last house had the same wall color (I’m obsessed with it, Valspar “Coconut Milk”) so these would work perfectly. One problemo. These panels were previously in our living room, which had much higher ceilings. Darn it, they were too long. And since I had painted them, I couldn’t hem them. Uhh, Hello Janna, there’s this new invention called SCISSORS. Β I just carefully cut through the bottom (which was a painted section) and the paint actually prevented it from fraying! Perfect!
Thankfully, our master bedroom was pulled together in a week and I was able to send some photos off to the editor. “No problem,” I said. “Here are those photos you wanted!” If she only knew!
Ok, your turn! What room has been giving you fits? Make a little time in your schedule this week to give it some attention. Even if it’s only 5 minutes. Dream a little. Brainstorm about what you want it to feel like. But don’t overthink it. Work with what you have, and watch it come together. You might be surprised!

yellowprairieint - Love it Amanda! Enjoy your special time together!
Katie Rowley - What great advice and a great reminder!! Being unique and taking care of others are really what it is all about! We are all so lucky to have our virtual communities to inspire and challenge us but we shouldn’t ever let it take over or control our lives! Being centered in Christ allows us to be unique and think of others a bit more effortlessly. Thanks for this beautiful post!
yellowprairieint - Love that, Katie…having it be a little more effortless to think of others. Thanks for stopping by!
Candice - Such a great message! Thank you for sharing and encouraging the positive!! The Internet and the world in general needs more positive stuffs! I’m making cookies today and am going to share them with my new neighbors.
yellowprairieint - Oh your neighbors will love that! Way to go!
Wendy Jo Trigsted - This is darling! I love your heart…and I couldn’t agree more! I have a friend who has been sick and in bed since August. YES…SINCE AUGUST. I have nothing to complain about…a cute care package is going out to her today…equipped with chocolate and fun wrapping paper! Loving others is a blessing!
yellowprairieint - Oh Wendy, that will brighten that sweet friend’s day so much. How thoughtful!
Leslie - I have a friend who has been going through some rough times. She has had little time for herself lately! I’m going to pack up a little “fall love package” and drop it at her porch! Thank you for reminding me to get out there and bless someone!
yellowprairieint - Leslie, that sounds wonderful! What a blessing you are!
Alicia - Mail a card or two with a note stating thanks for being a friend!… It will brighten anyone’s day?
yellowprairieint - I agree Alicia! It’s always a treat to find something personal in the mailbox…not just junk mail and bills! π
Emily Tate - Physical appearance has never been too important to me, because the appearance we had nothing to do with creating is something that will eventually fade. Whether good or bad we cannot take any credit for having it. The real beauty lies in someone’s heart and soul, and is something that will shine through even when all else fades. My friends are the most beautiful people I have ever laid eyes on. When some asks me “isn’t she so beautiful?” My response is almost always “I’m not sure I haven’t met them.” This response drives my daughter’s crazy but it the truth. I can’t decide until I know a person.
yellowprairieint - So true, Emily! The heart is what determines beauty…someone reflecting God’s love is always beautiful! π
Ali - Thank you, thank you, thank you for the encouragement and inspiration. Many of my mama friends (and I!) have been feeling overwhelmed with all of the changes that come with acclimating to fall schedules. Sounds to me like a good reason to brighten some days with a plate of cookies, and a good way to have some time with the kiddos in the process.
PS–I’m new to your blog, but am so inspired by the warmth and love of your home. I’m a farm girl myself, and I agree–it’s just something that sticks with you. π
Pam Foster - Hi Honey!
I LOVED your home tour! It is soooo good! I loved what you wrote and how you decorated every room! You know how I love being in your home with all of you! Thank you so much for all the wonderful things you do to make your home so inviting and warm! I also loved what you said at the end about looking beyond ourselves to see how God wants to be love to others through us each day!
Thank you! I needed to hear that again today!
I LOVE you and can’t wait to show this to Dad!
God bless you and have a great day!
Love,
Mom
angela betlewicz - WOW! this is amazingly stunning! Looks perfect!
