  • WELCOME!

I'm Janna, and I'm so glad you're here! Follow along with me on this adventure of life, decorating, and bringing modern farmhouse goodness to my little corner of the world.

Growing up on an apple farm in Oregon, I dreamed of running a "big business" in the city. I never imagined I'd grow up to have such a fondness for the everyday items I tripped over in our barn. Life is funny like that. Sometimes the most unexpected detours are the most fun!

2015-11-02_0015

This last weekend. Friends, I’m so excited to share this with you. I might share a lot of details that you don’t care about. That’s ok. Enjoy the pics. But if you’ve got a few minutes to spend with me, I can’t wait to tell you all that you’d ever want to know about our Texas adventure…and living the dream of a visit to Magnolia Market.

2015-11-02_0002

Can you SEE the excitement on my face? Couldn’t believe we were at the airport, ready to go. A few months ago, I got the email about the Magnolia Market grand opening and the limited tickets that would be available. I called my hubby that rainy morning, from the side of the road. “Babe! What do you think? Wouldn’t that be the MOST fun??” He gave me the green light to buy tickets….and then, NO. Sold out. I. Was. So. Bummed. I told myself we’d go some other time. That night after dinner, my husband and I went out to the garage to play ping pong. Don’t judge. It’s a great stress reliever. Just as we were setting up to play, he asked me to look at a weird e-mail he got on his phone. Ummmm, it was the confirmation for the tickets HE BOUGHT for us to go to the second night that was added to the Magnolia Market grand opening. HUSBAND. OF. THE YEAR.

2015-11-02_0001

Sooo, back to Texas. Thursday night when we arrived we hit “Uncle Julio’s” for dinner. Couldn’t get enough of these light fixtures. Or the guacamole.

2015-11-02_0004

Friday morning, there was a HUGE storm coming through. Rain that was more like someone spraying us down with a fire hose. But not as subtle. As Oregonians, we pride ourselves on being accustomed to rain. No big deal, right? Texas rain = not like Oregon rain. Nevertheless, we grabbed a quick breakfast and headed out to a day of working with 3 awesome clients all across the Dallas area. These people. Wow. A huge thank you to these 3 clients for welcoming us into their homes and allowing me to style up some fun areas, borrow their ladders, take items from all over their homes, and walk on counter tops in my stocking feet. Don’t worry, I’m a professional. 😉2015-11-02_0006

Stop #1. This sweet girl was headed to Magnolia Market on Friday night, so we hit her house first. Tackled the tops of the kitchen cabinets. So much fun and she had awesome stuff to work with.2015-11-02_0005

It’s pretty much impossible to photograph cabinet tops and really capture the look with my iPhone. But my camera crew was busy. 😉

2015-11-02_0007

Stop #2. This fun client had the most amazing collection of antique books. EVER. If you know me at all, you know that’s my FAVORITE thing to style built-ins with…favorite. I took tons of gorgeous old books off of the shelves, and reworked each one to incorporate some of her beautiful accessories as well, and to break up the heavy look of the books. I was in styling heaven.2015-11-02_0008

It was fun to incorporate items from their travels and cherished family pieces.

2015-11-02_0011

After that, we took a quick break and had the pleasure of meeting the beautiful and talented Caroline of Vine + Branches (do you follow her on Instagram @vineandbranchestx?). Caroline has been an “Instagram friend” for awhile, and it was a complete joy to meet her. She is just as sweet and wonderful in person, and then some. I love it when “Instagram friends” become your “real life” friends. Caroline, I will TREASURE this beautiful “gather” sign!!

2015-11-02_0010

Stop #3. This sweet client has been an e-design client for a couple months, as she’s been working on a renovation in her home. It was so much fun to meet her after many emails, FaceTimes, and phone calls. The goal here was to style some gorgeous new built-ins that were just installed. Unfortunately the painter hadn’t made it out yet, so we decided I would style them up, the client took pictures, and she will recreate the look after they’re painted a beautiful, clean white! I can’t WAIT to see the finished product!

2015-11-02_0012

New stone will be added to the fireplace, the mantel will be stained dark, and the shiplap and built-ins will be painted a fresh white. This room will be stunning! What a fun way to wrap up our whirlwind day of styling all across Dallas.

As we drove back to the hotel, my heart was full. The unique opportunity to travel and do what I love is just sheer, absolute joy. Meeting people, hearing about their lives, being welcomed into their homes, what a privilege! I’m already dreaming about what location we might hit next.

Ok. Here we go. Are you ready? Buckle up. Saturday arrived, we packed up for Waco and headed out. I was almost sick, I was so excited.

2015-11-02_0013

Ohhhhhh myyyyyy goodness. As we walked up to the silos, it was almost like my eyes couldn’t even take it all in.

2015-11-03_0002

Oh hello, Magnolia Market. Wait, WHAT??? Someone pinch me. PINCH. ME.

2015-11-03_0003

I quickly took a pic of our feet by the “welcome” sign on the floor…but let’s be honest. It’s pretty hard to look down when you’re standing in the doorway of Magnolia Market. Wow. It’s everything you think it will be, and more. The displays. The farmhouse treasures. The lighting. The high ceilings. The gorgeous floors. Did I mention the displays? Rustic, chippy, industrial, straight-out-of-the-barn, in a great way. It was pretty packed with lots of eager shoppers, so great pictures weren’t really possible, but I’ll show you what I managed to snap! And if you were there, I’m sorry if I captured your back-side on film. 😉

2015-11-03_0008

This is just inside the door. I mean, can you even deal with this genius wall?

2015-11-03_0009

Everything in this pic. Yes. Just yes.

2015-11-03_0010

Gorgeousness overload. And Chip’s Corner…so cute. I noticed a lot of men hanging around over there. 🙂

2015-11-03_0011

Now that I’m looking at these pics, I’m noticing things I didn’t even SEE when we were there! And that clock? Yes, please!

2015-11-03_0012

Once we finished our first round of shopping, it was time to find the end of the line. Uhhh, where might that be? Whoa! The line was long, but you know what? It didn’t even matter. Everyone was so nice, it was fun just standing in line chatting.

2015-11-03_0013

2015-11-03_0014

We ran into our friends Jolia (@farmfreshhomestead on Instagram), Jamie, and Jessie just outside…we were all excited and talking about our finds, and where to go next!

2015-11-03_0004

Ryan and I decided to take one of Jo Jo’s recommendations for lunch…Cafe Homestead. Probably the BEST cheeseburger I’ve ever had in my life. I wish I had a pic, but apparently I inhaled it before that was possible.

2015-11-03_0005

Next up was Harp Design Co., as seen on Fixer Upper. Clint makes all of those gorgeous farmhouse tables, etc…amazing!

We hit a few more cute shops on LaSalle St., including Junque in the Trunk, and I was wishing I had more than one suitcase. 🙂 After that I was ready to put my feet up for a bit before the “Silobration” at Magnolia in a couple hours. We checked into our hotel, and I tried to sleep off that cheeseburger. 😉

2015-11-03_0022

The rain finally gave way to a beautiful evening. We arrived at the grand opening #silobration around 6:30pm. We joined other anxious attendees in line, and let me tell ya, the air was electric. So much excitement. I love how people traveled from all over to come celebrate this big moment with Chip and Joanna Gaines. They are so warm, so relatable…I think we’re all so happy for their success because we just LIKE them! They’re great people, doing beautiful work, raising an awesome family. All of it. Just love it.

2015-11-03_0019

2015-11-03_0016

We found a good spot to stand and wait for “Johnnyswim” to come out and perform. It was an absolutely perfect night at the silos. No rain, not too hot, not too cold…and there was just a fun sense of anticipation in the air.

2015-11-03_0018

What a great concert. Johnnyswim was amazing. It’s an absolute thrill to watch people do what they love. It became a whole night of that…Johnnyswim, singing their hearts out and telling their story through music, and then…well, I’m sure you can imagine that Chip Gaines would not come to the stage in an ordinary fashion…

2015-11-03_0017

Ya, see that middle pic? That’s Chip, getting ready to rappel down the side of the silo. Of course. So Chip. 😉

Hearing from Chip and Joanna was the BEST. You know how they make you feel like you know them, just by watching them on TV? So personable, so down-to-earth…it was just awesome. It was like we were over at their house for dinner, sharing stories around the table. A perfect way to cap off the #silobration.

2015-11-02_0014

And I can’t wait to go back.

See that sign? “Nest.” That’s what I’ve been called to do this week. Take care of my nest.

Life is crazy these days. Our teenagers are always busy, going different directions, my hubby and I are busy with our jobs, you get it. I know you do, because I’m sure your life is very similar to ours. Often times I find myself forgetting to “enjoy the ride” because I’m too caught up in busy-ness. It’s like I’m on a merry-go-round, and I juuuuuuust want to step off for a bit.

Last week I really felt like I was taking the bull by the horns when I made the very grown-up decision to clean out my underwear drawer. Oh ya. You know, because EVERY SINGLE TIME I’m in a hurry in the morning I can’t find matching socks. And the last 4 undies stuffed into my drawer after laundry are in a constant rotation. And the last time I tried to find some black tights it turned into a 30 minute expedition. WHY DO I LIVE LIKE THIS? Because I “don’t have time” to clean out my underwear drawer. Nope, I’d rather live in constant frustration and have that lovely nagging feeling in the back of my mind about how I’m not organized and then move on to thinking about how someone MUST be coming in and stealing my socks/tights/favorite undies, or maybe my washer is eating them. Well, that one day, last Wednesday, I’d had enough. I “cleared my schedule” for 30 minutes and organized the underwear drawer. Oh. My. Goodness. The JOY it brought! Who KNEW the drawer opened so easily? And WHAT??? You mean the socks are all paired up and in ONE specific location?

This little escapade started me thinking about the rest of my life. What if I started taking time to focus on the little details? Light bulb. The little details are where the JOY is! L-I-V-I-N-G life. Not just running around like a crazy person, and trying to keep all of the plates in the air like a circus performer.

Well it was a nice thought, but life is busy, and I let it happen again.

Then this week arrived. Our daughter got really sick with a bad virus. I cancelled some clients, took her in to the doctor (she’s going to be fine, just needs rest and TLC), and was forced to  s l o w  d o w n. School? Nope. After-school volleyball games? Nope. Dinner date with friends? Nope. Clients? Nope. Meetings? Nope. Big party with our entire family celebrating 4 birthdays this weekend? Nope. Just time to BE. Time to be the mom my daughter needs. Time to be a homemaker and catch up on laundry. Time to care for my family. Time to sleep in a little, hang out on the sofa and watch movies with my girl, and ENJOY THE RIDE. As a mom it’s hard to see your kids suffer, but my daughter’s great attitude has shown me a different side. We’ve both decided we’re happy about an opportunity to slow down. To take a break.

Stepping off that merry-go-round has been JUST what the doctor ordered.

I hope you’re smarter than me, and actually CHOOSE to carve out some down-time without being forced into it by a virus. You’ll be so glad you did. And, dare I say, when it’s time to step back on that crazy merry-go-round of life, you might actually ENJOY the ride.2015-10-16_0003

…and she might not look like it, but Sophie has been beside herself with excitement to have us home this week. 😉

Testing, testing…is this thing on? If you’re local to the Oregon/Washington area, I felt it necessary to alert you to some great stuff, in our own back yard! Do you love some good junk? Old farm stuff? One-of-a-kind pieces? Do you have plans today? YOU DO NOW!!

Yesterday was amazing. It all began at the Junk Bonanza Show at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Ridgefield, Washington. The show continues all day today and tomorrow. It’s $10 to get in (cash only) and there are some fantastic vendors. I found this darling old rustic ladder, and I can’t wait to find the perfect spot for it. There were piles of treasures everywhere and by the time I got there late in the afternoon, the crowd had died down quite a bit. Even though there were so many fun things to see, I somehow walked out with only a couple little items. Maybe I should have had a Snickers, because that’s definitely not like me. 😉 Ever have those days when you just can’t commit?

After the Junk Bonanza, my hubby and I decided to drive into Battleground, Washington to see a movie. We missed our turn for the theater, and boy am I glad we did. We ended up driving right past a shop I’ve heard about for a long time (and always wanted to check out), Rusty Glamour. Turns out Battleground is full of adorable little shops…it was making me crazy that we didn’t have time to check them all out, but I’ll take what I can get. My sweet husband saw that look in my eye, turned the car around, and we headed back to Rusty Glamour…Oh man, buckle up. Are you ready to hear about this goodness?

2015-10-09_0003

Let me set the stage. We only had about 15 minutes if we wanted to make our movie. Power shopping? Oh, I’ve got this. 😉

We walked in and my mouth dropped open.

So. Much. Cuteness. So. Little. Time.

I think I yelled something at the sweet girl at the counter, like “Ummm, this is the CUTEST shop. EVER!” Who knows what I said. I was officially under the spell of Rusty Glamour! Right away, I spotted so many must-haves. Think industrial-y, farmy, rustic-y, chippy, chalkboard-y, heart eyes for days kind of must-haves. And it just kept getting better. The prices were so good, I ended up with quite a pile! (I’ll show you more on that coming soon.)

2015-10-09_0002

This. This is the glorious scene I was taking in just inside the door. In this pic the lights make it look like the glory of Heaven was shining down on this spot…well not to exaggerate, but I’m pretty sure angels were singing. One of the treasures I brought home is that “Unit 47” barrel-y thing. I have no idea what it is, but I DO know it will be so cute in my house somewhere. We ran up and down the aisles, power shopping like a couple of crazies, loaded up the car, and made it to the movie, just in time (We saw “the Intern”…sooooo good!!).

So, grab your girlfriends, jump in the car, and hit these fun stops! And if you are lucky and you have more than the 15 minutes I had in Battleground, tell me all about the other cute shops in town! I can’t wait to go back!

Oh, statement pieces, how I love you. You might not be so pocket-book-friendly, but a girl can dream, right? I found a few fun things to share with you, that actually aren’t too hard on the wallet. And they’re DEFINITELY easy on the eyes!

Soooo, since Christmas is on the horizon, I thought maybe a few husbands out there needed some gift ideas. 😉 All of the items this week are from Antique Farmhouse. They are constantly getting new things, so if you like anything here, don’t wait! Text your hubby, right now. 😉

2015-10-08_0002

2015-10-03_0002

So I do this weird thing, and maybe you do it too. I find the CUTEST top while out shopping. And I mean CUTE. The details…the color…it hides all of the mid-section imperfections, it really is the cutest thing. I buy it, take it home, hang it up, and save it. You know, for a special occasion when I reeeeeeally want to look cute. This top can’t be added to the rotation on just any old day. I HAVE to save it for something important. Days, weeks, sometimes months go by, and every time I see that cute top in my closet, I think, “Oh ya, I can’t WAIT til I get to wear that!” Ummmmmm, excuse me? What. Am. I. Waiting. For?

Rewind almost 30 years. Yep, we’re going way back to good ‘ol middle school. That time in life when you feel great about yourself. Um, right. Not so much. So one day while out shopping for school clothes, I found the perfect top.  So on-trend for 1986. It was a white cotton button-up with bold royal blue accents. I pared it with a bright red jumper and just for fun, I threw a yellow shaker sweater over top. If only I had a picture of this fashion disaster to show you (ketchup and mustard, anyone?). Needless to say, the primary color scheme probably wasn’t optimal. Mix that with my huge glasses, a fresh perm, and my sorry attempt at lavender eye shadow. Somehow, I felt unstoppable in that outfit. I wanted to wear it ALL the time. It was the cutest thing my middle school brain could imagine. So, on occasion I rocked it several times a week….ya. This was trouble. Do you REMEMBER 8th grade? There is a STRICT unsaid law that you DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, EVER wear the same outfit twice in the same month, let alone week. The unkind teasing that ensued made 8th grade pretty unpleasant.

So maybe you didn’t live the “same outfit twice in one week” debacle, but perhaps you were teased once or twice about your clothing choices. Maybe you’re like me and when you’re getting ready to go somewhere, you ask yourself, “Did I wear this last time I saw this group of people?” Because heaven knows I don’t want to be caught wearing the same outfit to church 2 weeks in a row. (Refer to paragraph 2) I think we’ve all had situations that shape us. They make us think about the ideal. The what-could-be. The how-we-SHOULD-be.

What about that fine china in the cabinet over the refrigerator? You know, the dishes you got for your wedding 23 years ago that you’re saving for a special occasion? Like maybe SOMEDAY you’re going to host 12 people for a fancy dinner party. And when that happens, you’ll be all set.

Maybe it’s that fun “date night idea list” that you pinned on Pinterest. Maybe you even pinned it twice. Ya, that would be fun someday.

“Hey I know, we should call up those old friends we haven’t seen in forever and get together. Maybe after I lose a few pounds. And get my hair done. And our schedule gets a little lighter.”

That family vacation? Letting the kids have a slumber party? Getting more involved at church?

My point is, LIFE. LIVE IT.

What are we waiting for? Oh my goodness, let’s be a little crazy this week. Bust out that fine china and serve up your Monday night spaghetti to the people who REALLY matter in your life. Schedule that date night and make it happen. Text those long-lost friends right now (go ahead, I’ll wait…) and see when they can get together for dinner. Don’t have extra cash laying around for a family vacation? Drop everything and take your kids to the park, without looking at your phone even once. Make the priorities, priorities. And PLEASE, for the love, wear that cute top.
